My name is Rachel, and starting August 1st, I will be your new Director of Children, Youth, and Family Ministries. My first day at Light of Christ is approaching quickly and I cannot be more excited!
My passion for youth ministry was fostered during my summers spent as a camp counselor in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Colorado. While there, I mentored campers during overnight camps, encouraged them on thrilling backpacking trips, and led fun activities during VBS day camps!
I graduated from St. Olaf College in 2015, and for the past year I have been living and serving in Jerusalem and the West Bank as a volunteer through the ELCA’s Young Adults in Global Mission program. I taught English at a school serving the Palestinian population for children with visual impairments and special needs. I also spent one day a week at the Lutheran church synod office at the Women’s Desk, where I organized seminars and wrote articles promoting gender justice in the church and society. These experiences have cultivated in me a passion for children’s faith education with an emphasis in service, creativity, and exploration.
For Palestinian Christians, the olive tree stands as a symbol for the steadfast, enduring love of God, rooted in community, and nourished by life-giving waters. I hope that I can contribute to and nurture Light of Christ’s children, youth, and family ministries so that the church can be an olive tree, a sign of comfort and revitalization, for all members. I ask for your prayers as I transition from Jerusalem back to Minnesota. I also ask that you be patient with and supportive of me as I settle into this new community and job. I cannot wait to meet each and every one of you, and I look forward to doing ministry and having fun together!
