Columbarium

On Sunday, November 6, 2022, we dedicated our newly constructed columbarium. This is the first columbarium built in Delano and so it may be unfamiliar to some. So, to put it simply, a columbarium is a place to inter the ashes of a loved one who has died.

More and more people are choosing cremation these days.  In fact, over 60% of Minnesotans are choosing cremation. We built this columbarium to provide that option to the people of Light of Christ.

The Light of Christ columbarium has ninety-six niches. The niches are 12” by 12” by 12.”  This means that there is room for two urns in each niche. When the time comes for the committal, or inurnment, service to be held the niche is opened and a brief committal service is held, often at the conclusion of the funeral or memorial service. Then the niche is closed again. The name(s) of the persons who are interred in the niche are engraved on the front of the granite face plate, along with their birth and death dates. If you are interested in finding out more about the columbarium and the purchase of a niche, please contact the church office.

Pastor Kuenzel had this to say at the dedication service. “We are delighted to have this columbarium as part of our life together here at Light of Christ, for we are an Easter people, and we share an Easter faith. This columbarium is a visible symbol of our Easter faith. Easter means that death is not the end, but the just the beginning of life in all its fullness. As Jesus says in John 11:25-26: ‘I am the resurrection and the life. All who believe in me, though they die, yet shall they live; and all who live and believe in me shall never die.’ It is in this Easter faith, and in this Easter hope, that we have built this columbarium to the glory of God.
